LIFE AND DEATH IN THE UNDERGROWTH

This collection was made in collaboration with the forest on Wurundjeri Country. Tiny specimens were gathered with care from my garden and surrounding bushland: soil; Indigenous and introduced plants; termites fallen after flight; bark from mountain ash trees brought down in windstorms; new growth, leaf litter, roots, and raindrops.
Expired photographic papers, destined for landfill, were used to create unique camera-less prints bearing the marks of exposure, decay, weather, and time. Some were further transformed using iron-salt cyanotype chemistry.
The impressions were photographed in their fleeting states. The original works remain unfixed and light-sensitive. Like the ecosystems from which they emerge, their survival depends upon the conditions in which they are held and cared for.
